Project: The Bee House
Working closely with the MEPC, SRA Architects, Stantec, Charlton Abbot Forestry and Barnwood Contractors to transform Building 140, ASA has designed a landscape which retro-fits sustainability and creates a more welcoming space to occupiers.
Car-parking was removed adjacent to the new frontage, allowing for the formation of a series of planted swales; cleaning water from the paving and building roof, as well as creating inviting seating areas for occupiers. Whilst the use of an innovative gravel mulch system (developed by the University of Sheffield) helps to reduce the need for weeding and keeps moisture within the soils.
The water course that was previously screened by parking, has been opened up and planted with native marginal plants, surrounded by a pictorial meadow, designed to provide an extended season of nectar and colour. ASA also designed a bespoke bee hibernacula, integrating signage with a home for solitary bees.
The landscape supports the creation of a Oxfordshire’s largest collaborative work space, which will be the new headquarters for MEPC.
